The Singapore Association of Mental Health (SAMH) congratulates Adj Assoc Prof Lee Cheng, Vice President of SAMH, on his appointment as Justice of the Peace (JP) for a period of 5 years with effect from 24 April 2018.
Adj Assoc Prof Lee Cheng has been appointed as a JP by the President of Singapore. Adj Assoc Prof Lee Cheng has a high social standing and has distinguished himself in public, social and community service. As a JP, Adj Assoc Prof Lee Cheng will exercise such powers and perform such duties as may be conferred on him by law. These powers include filing complaints to the courts relating to any offences committed under the Children and Young Persons Act and issuing search warrants to the Police under the Societies Act. A JP can also be appointed to the Board of Visiting Justices to inspect prison facilities and ensure that the basic welfare of prisoners is being taken care of. In addition, part of Adj Assoc Prof Lee Cheng’s role as a JP involves performing functions as requested by the public, such as the solemnization of marriages.
